The Gateway North Sled Dog Race Association is a non-profit organization, which was formed in 1994 to promote traditional sled dog racing in Saskatchewan.
The organization is run completely by volunteers and a volunteer Board of Directors. The Directors come from all backgrounds and walks of life. We have a couple of dog mushers on the board, a couple of retirees, salesmen, cowboys, business men and women, government employees.
Hundreds of hours of planning and work go into getting ready for the race each year and hundreds of volunteers help with the actual running of the race. Before and during the race, a team of volunteer veterinarians monitors the dogs. The Race Marshals and their drivers are also critical to the race, and also volunteer their time. Trail crews scout, punch, clear and groom hundreds of kilometers of trail, and still other volunteers organize and crew the mass start and finish lines, race checkpoints and road safety crossings. Without all of these people, who often go unrecognized and under-appreciated, the dog teams and mushers would have no race to attend.
